The Story of Somali Luubaan
Frankincense is Somalia's ancient gift to the world. For thousands of years, the resin of the Boswellia tree — luubaan — has been harvested by hand in the mountains of Somalia and carried along the world's oldest trade routes.
Ancient Egyptians sailed to the Horn of Africa — the fabled Land of Punt — to bring back frankincense for temples and ceremonies. Somali luubaan perfumed the ancient world.
For centuries, Somali frankincense — beeyo and the prized maydi — traveled to Egypt, Rome, Arabia and India, making the Somali coast a center of the global incense trade.
